Stop Biting Your Nails

Stop Biting Your Nails

Are you guilty of biting your nails? This is a common habit and often hard to break. Many times, it began when you were a child. At times, you might notice that you’ve bitten so much that your nail beds are swollen and red. It’s easy to think that this only affects your nails, but your teeth are harmed as well.

What Happens to the Teeth?

Studies show that people who bite their nails also tend to chew items or clench their teeth. This puts them at a higher risk for bruxism, which is grinding of the teeth. This leads to headaches, receding gums, sensitivity, facial pain and ultimately, tooth loss.

That doesn’t sound pleasant, does it? Nail biting is often a sign of anxiety or stress, so you need to deal with it.

Ending the Habit
Here are some steps to help you beat the habit.

Trim your nails – When you cut your nails short, you are less likely to bite them. They are difficult to get a hold of and you start feeling less temptation.

Get a manicure – When your hands and fingernails look beautiful, you don’t want to bite them, especially when you’ve paid money to make them that way.

Reduce stress – Being deep breathing, meditation, yoga or any other practice that allows you to relax.

Put on bitter-tasting polish – If your nails taste bad, you won’t want to bite them.

Wear bandages or gloves – If all the other steps don’t work, you might need to step it up a notch with bandages and gloves. This makes your fingernails completely inaccessible.

If these steps don’t help, it’s time to consult with your doctor or dentist. For some people, nail-biting is related to deeper emotional pain that needs to be dealt with.

Whatever the reason behind it, you must take steps to end it. Not just for the sake of your teeth, but also for your overall happiness. If you need guidance or more suggestions, your dentist is available to help. Don’t be ashamed to make an appointment; you aren’t the only person dealing with this.
